Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Strong

In July of 2019, MaKaJaWan Scout Reservation was destroyed by a massive storm. Tens of thousands of trees were blown down, buildings destroyed, an entire camp left stranded for a night. The day after, all campers were asked to leave the property, and the staff began to clean up what they could.

The Hashtag

Unable to fly back to help with the work on the ground, I came up with #MaKaJaWanStrong and worked with the Northeast Illinois Council, the owner of the camp, to begin fundraising efforts. Within the next day, the hashtag was being used by council staff, camp alumni, parents, and the local scouting community at large.

The Logo

Along with making the hashtag. I designed a logo to be used in the marketing materials. It can still be seen at the bottom of most council emails as well as in many people’s Facebook profile pictures. In addition to the logo itself, I created mockups for merchandise for the council.

The Video

This video was made in the fall of 2019 for the Northeast Illinois Council’s fundraising campaign. Along with conducting and filming the formal interviews, I wrote, voiced, and edited the video. This video helped to raise $110,000 in a single night for the relief fund.
